Maryland regulates handguns more tightly than almost any other state. A buyer needs a Handgun Qualification License (Public Safety Article § 5-117.1), the model has to be on the state Handgun Roster, and the sale runs through a Maryland regulated-firearms dealer with a seven-day wait. We cannot check a roster entry or a license from a product listing, so we do not list handguns or frames at all. The same goes for the rifles Maryland bans as assault weapons (Criminal Law Article §§ 4-301 to 4-303) and for any magazine not stated as 10 rounds or fewer (§ 4-305). What is left is what you see: bolt, lever, pump and single-shot rifles, rimfires, field and pump shotguns, ammunition, optics and parts.

That still covers most of what Marylanders actually do with a long gun. Canada geese over cut corn in Kent and Queen Anne's counties and divers on the open Bay call for a 12-gauge that shrugs off salt and mud. Whitetails are hunted in every county, with shotguns and straight-wall rifles in some and bottleneck rifle cartridges in others, and the sika deer of the Dorchester marshes are a hunt found almost nowhere else in the country. West of Frederick the ridges of Allegany and Garrett counties are rifle country, with turkey and black bear.
